What Are The 7 Steps Of Skincare

What Are The 7 Steps of Skincare?

(A 50+ Woman’s Version)

Firstly, let’s remove a common myth : Most skincare routines don’t fail because they’re “missing” something. They fail because many women don’t stick to them.

At 50+, your skin doesn’t need more products. It needs consistency, moisture, and less messing around.

So yes — here are the 7 steps of skincare. The real ones. The steps that work for normal, sensitive, and active skin. The ones that will work if you persevere with the routine.

And these steps have been proven to help reduce the effects of rosacea, and sensitive skin,  from the feedback we have received.

Step 1: Cleanse (Morning + Night)

Your cleanser sets the tone for everything else.

You’re not trying to strip your skin.
You’re trying to create a clean, calm base.

In the morning: wash away sweat and overnight buildup.
At night: remove makeup, pollution, and the day’s stress.

If your skin ever feels tight after cleansing, the cleanser is wrong.

That tight, squeaky clean feeling? That’s damage. Not to be mistaken for a “fresh” skin.

For a cleaner product, just stick with something gentle and boring. Your skin at 50 doesn’t need drama.

Step 2: Hydrate (On Damp Skin)

This is where Hyaluronic Acid earns its place.

Apply the hydrating layer while your skin is still slightly damp. That’s how you lock water in — not by waiting for your skin to dry like sandpaper.

Hydration is not the same as moisturising, by the way :
Hydration = water
Moisture = sealing that water in

Get the order wrong, and you will be just wasting product.

Step 3: Nourish (Antioxidants Matter)

This is where superpower ingredients, like Manuka extract + Kakadu plum extract, deserve attention. Look to use skincare products that contain both of these.

They don’t just sound nice. They are included to serve a real important purpose :

  • Manuka = calming, supportive, and perfect for sensitive, reactive skin.
  • Kakadu Plum = insane antioxidant protection (more stable than most vitamin-C).

We carefully selected, and formulated our ingredients, and each one has a defined reason why it is included. All our ingredient details are proudly displayed on our website which you can read here

We also encourage women to carefully read the ingredients label of their current skincare products. Whilst the product labels ingredients list can sometimes be made up of some very ambiguous, and somewhat scary sounding wording, it is very important to ensure you are not damaging your skin, and ultimately your health. We take this topic seriously enough as to have posted a ‘How To Read Your Skincare Labels’ article on our website. Please read if you are unsure of what your beauty products REALLY  contain.

At 50+, you don’t need any buzzword “anti-ageing marketing”. You  just need good anti-inflammation and barrier support — that’s what stops the skin from looking old in the first place.

This is PROTECTIVE skincare, not PANIC skincare.

Step 4: Moisturise (The Most Important Step)

If people only did ONE thing consistently, I’d choose this.

Most routines fail because no one moisturises often enough — or consistently enough.

Morning: a smaller, protective layer.
Night: a more generous, repair-focused layer.

This is where our Hydrating Glow Face Cream and Age Perfection Night Cream can do the heavy lifting.

One of my clients, who is 52, came to me with severe redness from rosacea.
Triggers for her were cold wind, stress, and the harsh products she was previously using.

Within a few weeks of consistent use of our Hydrating Glow Face Cream, and also by simplifying her routine, the redness visibly reduced. She experienced fewer flare-ups, much calmer skin, and less heat in the cheeks.

This was not magic. Just ingredients that respect the skin barrier and a routine she actually stuck to.

That’s the real win.

Step 5: Massage (2–3x a Week With Gua Sha)

This isn’t a TikTok trend. Done right, it’s useful.

Gua Sha :

  • Boosts circulation
  • Helps drainage
  • Softens tension in the face and jaw
  • Gives skin a healthier tone over time

You don’t need to do it daily. 2–3 times a week is perfectly adequate.

Do it gently, and always with oil or cream. Never drag dry skin.

More pressure does not mean better results.

Step 6: Exfoliate (Once a Week. No More.)

Most women overdo exfoliating thinking that they have to perform this every day.

Once a week is adequate, and ensure to use a good exfoliating mitt in the shower.

That’s it.

  • Not daily
  • Not every second day
  • Not “until you’re pink”

At 50+, your skin turnover is slower. Over-exfoliating just creates sensitivity, inflammation and broken capillaries.

Once a week. Be kind. Move on.

Step 7: Protect (Yes — Even When It’s Cloudy)

Even though Forbidden Beauty doesn’t sell SPF, this protection still matters.

Sun damage is responsible for up to 80% of visible facial ageing.
Wrinkles, uneven tone, sagging, sensitivity — all accelerated by UV.

If you do my routine and skip this… you’re rowing with one oar.

Wear it daily. Even if you’re “just popping out.”

The Truth No One Tells You

At 50+, skincare is not about chasing youth.

It’s about protecting what you have, calming what’s irritated, and being disciplined enough to repeat the boring stuff daily.

That’s where women go wrong:
They want transformation, not consistency.

But consistency is the only real anti-aging trick there is.

And frequent moisturising?
It’s still the most powerful thing you can do for your skin.
No argument.
